APPRENTICE TRAINING

The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich provided opportunities for both Craft, Student and Graduate Apprenticeships. The formally indentured apprenticeship for craft and student apprentices lasted five years, while graduates served only two years. All spent an initial period in the Training Shop, This provided basic hand tool working skills together with machining experience on lathes, milling ,shaping and grinding machines.

FURTHER TRAINING

The wide variety of manufacturing operations provided all apprentices and trainees with great opportunities to develop skills. 3 or 6 month periods were spent in the drawing office, foundry, inspection, maching and fitting shops.

Alec Robb the Apprentice Supervisor oversaw all training activities and arranged each trainees work placement.

List of tools all apprentices had to make in the training shop. All were made to a close tolerance, polished to remove all tool marks and engraved with the apprentices’ name.
